Rio Marina, like the neighboring town of Rio Elba, based its
economy on the extraction of pyrite, a mineral from which iron
is recovered. That was up until a few years ago, but now the
old mines have been closed and are being transformed into a
mineral park. In town there is also a museum of the minerals
of Elba. The clock tower built by the Appiani in 1500 is lovely,
behind which is the small town beach.
